Union rejects 20% pay rise offer

THE Australian Shipowners Association (ASA) has expressed disappointment after maritime workers rejected a 20% pay rise.

The 48-hour strike was part of the Maritime Union of Australia’s (MUA) campaign for a 30% pay increase over three years.Maritime workers were offered a 20% pay rise as a result of the strike which affected shipping operations in northwest Western Australia and Bass Strait, but rejected it.

"We think that their claim that they're putting forward is excessive to the point of being outrageous and the flown-on impact of what it might do to the rest of the sector is really to the detriment of a large cross-section of the industry," ASA executive director, Teresa Hatch
