THE GLADSTONE Port Authority announced it is planning to expand Port Alma, south of Rockhampton in central Queensland.
Chief executive Leo Zussino said it hopes a deal with mining company Xstrata will see Port Alma become a major coal export facility.
Zussino said Xstrata has been given the right to build a coal terminal which will handle up to 30 million tonnes of coal per year.
Consequently, Port Alma has the potential to develop into a significant Queensland port, Zussino said.
Zussino added the Port is currently undergoing an exercise to evaluate the assets in Port Alma in order to formulate a plan in the next 12 to 18 months to steer a way forward for Port Alma to become a significant port on the Queensland coast.
He said the middle harbour is at the moment being investigated for a coal exporting terminal by Xstrata coal which is tied to the development of the Wandoan mine in the Surat Basin.
