A NEW standard developed by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) aims to remove doubts about the durability of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) for shipping containers.
The new standard applies to read-only RFID tags that would be permanently affixed to freight containers, requiring the tag to last the lifetime of its associated container.
In a statement announcing the new standard, Frank Nachbar, leader of the ISO committee which developed the standard, said it will "help container manufacturers, the shipping industry, customs, terminal operators, and container depot operators to achieve optimal benefits from using RFID.”
Nachbar said the new standard would improve efficiency, speed up operations and enhance security in the handling and transport of freight containers.
